The display in the lavender bed at the front of the school building was created by students across all year groups, with each contributing hand-made poppies.

The striking memorial was the idea of Alysha Moat, Teacher of PE and Health and Social Care at our school, which is part of the West Norfolk Academies Trust.

“The whole school has been involved,” she said. “A task has been set over the past two weeks for students in forms to colour and design poppies. Some have used pencil, some have used pen, and some have used their Photoshop skills.

“Anyone who wished to remember someone was asked to write it on the back of the poppy. We had names mentioned from Snettisham, Dersingham, Hunstanton, Heacham, Bircham Newton et cetera.”

As well as the poppy field, Smithdon marked Remembrance Day more traditionally, with Deputy Headteacher Sarah Robinson and our head students attending the service, parade and wreath laying in Hunstanton on Remembrance Sunday.

“It is important to us as a school to be part of this community event and support our families, many of whom have links to the armed services,” said Mrs Robinson.

Headteacher Amanda Gibbins also led a whole-school assembly, where a two-minute silence was held, and a wreath was laid in the poppy field. Smithdon students involved in Cadets, Scouts and other groups were invited to wear their uniforms for the occasion.

“It is important to remember those who died for us in war but also to celebrate all our services,” added Mrs Gibbins. “It is important to remember those of our community who served and continue to do so.”
